Indonesian Envoy Seeks Media Aid in Strengthening Ties with the Philippines

Manila: The Indonesian Embassy in Manila emphasized the strong partnership between Indonesia and the Philippines as the countries approach the 76th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on November 24. Indonesian Ambassador to the Philippines Agus Widjojo, during a media luncheon at The Manila Hotel, highlighted the media’s crucial role in enhancing public diplomacy and fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.

According to Philippines News Agency, Ambassador Widjojo expressed hope that the media would help broaden the celebration’s momentum to further solidify bilateral cooperation. He noted this gathering marked the first formal media event since 2022, celebrating friendship and likening The Manila Hotel’s resilience and hospitality to the spirit of the Philippines.

Widjojo discussed Indonesia’s recent national developments, including a target of 5.2 percent economic growth by 2025, following a 5.12 percent GDP increase in the second quarter, driven by sectors such as manufacturing, trade, and tourism. He mentioned a USD990-million incentive package launched on September 15, aimed at boosting investment, job creation, and workforce absorption. The envoy also reiterated Indonesia’s ‘Golden Indonesia 2045’ strategy, aiming to become a highly advanced and technologically proficient nation by its centennial of independence.

The ambassador highlighted key milestones in bilateral relations, noting that in 2024, two-way trade reached USD12.5 billion, with Indonesia exporting USD10.7 billion and importing USD1.7 billion from the Philippines. Indonesia ranked as the Philippines’ sixth-largest trading partner and fourth-biggest import source. The embassy expressed support for boosting Philippine exports to Indonesia to achieve a more balanced trade relationship.

In May 2025, both countries signed a memorandum of understanding on healthcare cooperation, with expanded collaboration expected as Indonesia was reassigned to the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific.
