Jellyfish Incident: Competition Organiser Did Not Refer To Local Authorities – Exco

Lumut: Yesterday’s open water swimming competition at Teluk Senangin in Lumut, which saw some 40 participants being stung by jellyfish, was organised without referring to the local authorities. Perak Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan stated that the organiser should have consulted the Malaysian Maritime Department for information regarding the jellyfish threat in the area.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the organiser is a private company from outside Perak and neither the local authorities nor the sports and health executive committees were informed about the event. Sivanesan emphasized the importance of consulting authorities before organizing such activities to ensure safety measures are in place. Fortunately, there were no severe incidents reported.

The incident involved at least 40 participants of the Teluk Senangin Open Water Swim 2025 competition who were injured by jellyfish stings and required hospital treatment. Among the participants was Raja Kecil Besar, Raja Azlan Muzzaffar Shah, son of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, competing in the 3-kilometre men’s junior 12-19 age group.

Two injured participants have been discharged from Manjung Hospital, while others treated as outpatients are reportedly in stable condition. The event organiser, AMMJB Swimmers Event and Clinics, assured on Facebook that Raja Azlan sustained only minor injuries to his hand and is in good health. The organiser also dismissed any claims of serious injury to Raja Azlan as baseless and aimed at discrediting the competition.
