Malakoff Secures Extension for 2,082MW Gas Power Portfolio

Kuala lumpur: Malakoff Corporation Bhd announced that three of its gas power plants, with a total capacity of 2,082 megawatts (MW), have been approved for an operational extension until December 31, 2029, following a notification from the Energy Commission. This extension will enable the plants to continue supplying electricity to the national grid, supporting Malaysia's energy requirements during a period of ongoing demand and transition.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the extension pertains to power plants operated by Malakoff's subsidiaries. These include two plants located in Lumut, Perak: a 1,303MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant and a 429MW open cycle gas turbine power plant. Additionally, the 350MW CCGT Prai Power Plant in Penang is part of this extension. The combined capacity of these plants ensures dependable and flexible electricity generation, which is crucial for maintaining grid stability and reserve margins, especially during high electricity demand periods.

Malakoff stated that new power purchase agreements will be established with Tenaga Nasional Bhd for each plant, allowing the corporation to produce the necessary capacity and supply electricity throughout the extension period. Syahrunizam Samsudin, Malakoff's group chief executive officer, emphasized the importance of the extension, describing it as a practical and responsible approach to addressing Malaysia's energy needs. He highlighted that extending the operations of these proven gas-fired facilities will enable them to continue providing reliable and flexible capacity, particularly during times of high demand. This approach is pivotal in supporting energy security and utilizing existing infrastructure effectively and cost-efficiently.
