Kuala lumpur: Malaysia is exploring potential collaborations with India and Iran in the telecommunications sector, focusing on enhancing online safety, as revealed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. This initiative was discussed during bilateral meetings with Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani from India and Iran’s Sattar Hashemi on the sidelines of the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025 (WTDC-25).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the potential for cooperation, leveraging the telecommunications experience of both India and Iran. He noted that these engagements could address issues like online scams and security concerns, as well as introduce beneficial telecommunications applications for the public. The discussions were attended by key Malaysian officials, including Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini, the Senior Adviser on International Affairs to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), MCMC Deputy Managing Director Datuk Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin, and Ahmad Norhad Zahari, Secretary of the Communications Technology Division.
Fahmi emphasized Malaysia’s strong diplomatic ties with India and Iran as a foundation for developing the telecommunications sector. The nation aims to enhance its digital infrastructure and online security, aligning with its broader aspirations. Moreover, Fahmi disclosed that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran concerning telecommunications is under review and anticipated to be finalized shortly.
He expressed interest in understanding and learning from Iran’s unique challenges in telecommunications. Beyond collaboration, Fahmi also communicated Malaysia’s intention to retain its seat on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council, with elections slated for November 2026. He underscored Malaysia’s contributions to the ITU Council, which include sharing insights on standards, specifications, and telecommunications advancements, as well as addressing challenges of internet accessibility in rural areas through initiatives like the National Digital Network (JENDELA).
