BANGI: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (MCDF) to study best practices from other countries to enhance the nation's civil defence capabilities. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, highlighted Switzerland as a model, noting its successful establishment of a network of shelters to ensure population protection. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid emphasized Switzerland's legislative approach, which includes laws mandating the integration of nuclear shelters in new buildings, resulting in over 8.6 million available shelter spaces. This strategic planning and foresight, he noted, significantly strengthen a nation's resilience, as he conveyed in a speech at the MCDF Annual Appreciation Dinner, which was delivered by Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. Ahmad Zahid further suggested that the MCDF could gain insights from Indonesia and Turkiye, which handle various natural and man-made challeng es. He pointed out Indonesia's substantial investments in disaster risk management, focusing on local community empowerment. Similarly, he mentioned Turkiye's advancements in disaster preparedness, achieved through public education campaigns, legislation, and infrastructure investments. He urged the MCDF to proactively study and adapt these international best practices to fit Malaysia's specific context and realities. "If we can undertake this effort, insya-Allah we can build a civil defence system that not only protects but also assures the people that we are prepared to face any challenge," Ahmad Zahid stated. Additionally, Ahmad Zahid expressed hopes for increased collaboration between the MCDF and the public through more awareness programmes on disaster threats and safety. He stressed the importance of cooperation between security personnel and the public during emergencies or disasters for a swift and effective response, which he believes offers significant advantages in overcoming security challenges more effectively.
