Kuala lumpur: The charity match 'Match of Hope: Solidarity for Mothers and Children in Gaza' held at Merdeka Stadium tonight was more than just a friendly game since it served as a symbol of Malaysian unity, with nearly 50 percent of the RM100,000 target for the Gaza Baby Bag Fund Project successfully raised so far.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Chairman of the Malaysian Parliamentary Caucus and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, stated that the inaugural programme was planned within two weeks and it successfully brought together Members of Parliament and national football legends, including Datuk Dollah Salleh. Syed Ibrahim emphasized that the event was a symbol of hope and highlighted the importance of delivering a message of solidarity creatively. He announced a personal contribution of RM5,000 and noted that fundraising efforts would continue until the end of March, expressing confidence in meeting the target with ongoing public support.
Meanwhile, MyCARE Chairman Prof. Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Kamal Nasharuddin Mustapha explained that the funds would provide hygiene kits and basic necessities to those facing critical conditions due to the prolonged conflict. He noted that while the RM100,000 target may seem small in the context of Gaza, it is still significant. MyCARE plans to channel the aid through its networks, having already channeled approximately RM30 million in aid to Gaza since October 7, 2023, benefiting nearly 700,000 recipients.
Dr. Kamal also mentioned the launch of the 'MyRamadan' campaign, with a collection target of RM4 million for this year's Ramadan, compared to RM3.2 million raised last year, with plans to distribute these funds to Gaza and other areas in need.
In the same vein, Ministry of Communications Secretary-General Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah remarked that sports platforms can inclusively ignite the spirit of solidarity across race, religion, and political affiliations. He affirmed the Ministry's support for efforts fostering unity and understanding, highlighting that sports transcends barriers and evoking a stronger spirit at Stadium Merdeka could inspire independence for Palestine.
