Kuala Lumpur: Discussions are underway between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Microsoft, the owner of LinkedIn, regarding the licensing of the social media platform, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. He stated that the discussions aim to assess whether LinkedIn meets the criteria required to register for an Application Service Provider (ASP) Class Licence in Malaysia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi revealed that LinkedIn has over eight million users in Malaysia, a figure announced by LinkedIn for the first quarter of 2025. MCMC has initiated contact with Microsoft to discuss the licensing requirements. Fahmi shared these details with reporters after launching the Future Health for All (FH4A) Pilot Programme.
Fahmi also mentioned ongoing discussions about licence registration for other social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube. He noted that for Meta, the process is in the final phase, with one document currently awaiting submission.
Earlier, the Ministry of Communications announced that Telegram became the third platform, following TikTok and WeChat, to receive ASP licence approval.
