Penang: The Ministry of Education (MOE) is urging schools to promote the use of face masks as a measure to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) among students, teachers, and school staff.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek emphasized that the MOE has aligned its guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) with the Ministry of Health (MOH). These procedures focus on health care, safety, and hygiene within the school community. The minister stressed the importance of monitoring the situation closely and reminded state directors and senior leadership within the MOE to implement the measures outlined in the guidelines.
Minister Fadhlina, speaking at the Byram Estate resettlement project officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, stated that while influenza cases have been detected in schools, the situation remains under control with ongoing monitoring. The MOE has called on school administrators to stay vigilant and ensure adherence to SOPs to contain the outbreak and protect the well-being of the school community.
The minister further noted that the MOE is committed to monitoring both students and teachers, acknowledging the large size of the school community. She reiterated the need for administrators to prioritize precautionary and safety measures to prevent further spread, in line with established SOPs.
In response to inquiries about potential school closures if influenza cases continue to rise, Minister Fadhlina clarified that such a decision would be considered only after all preventive measures have been implemented and complied with, as per the MOE’s SOPs.
