Mosques to Evolve with Youth Involvement in Administration: Zulkifli

Kuala lumpur: The narrative surrounding mosques must evolve with the times by providing wider space for young people to play roles in the administration and development of these institutions, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan. He emphasized that youth involvement should not be limited to routine tasks but should be expanded to more strategic roles to enhance professionalism and strengthen mosque management capabilities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Zulkifli expressed a vision for young people to take on roles as the next generation of mosque administrators. He stressed the importance of broadening their roles to drive professionalism and the capacity of mosques, especially in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. He highlighted the need for mosques to become community hubs that foster a sense of belonging among young people, with spaces open for youth activities, intellectual discussions, and volunteerism.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, who was also present, supported the initiative by announcing the Rakan Masjid X Rakan Muda Ramadan initiative. This strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia aims to strengthen youth development based on Malaysia MADANI values. The initiative recognizes houses of worship as sources of knowledge and inclusive social institutions.

Dr Mohammed Taufiq noted that the collaboration is not just routine but involves designing various programmes that integrate existing initiatives at both JAKIM and KBS. This integration will allow JAKIM to fill spiritual programmes and KBS to provide leadership programmes at the mosque level, ultimately shaping higher-quality future leaders for the nation.

KBS stated that the Rakan Masjid X Rakan Muda Ramadan initiative will be driven through the KBS-JAKIM Joint Committee. This committee will coordinate activities to enliven mosques and nurture balanced individuals in terms of character, spirituality, intellect, and social development. The initiative's main objectives include Leadership Succession, High-Impact National Assets, Holistic Well-being, and the Prevention of Social Ills.

The Rakan Muda Ramadan programme is set to be implemented in 15 states, including the Federal Territory of Labuan, focusing on religious and volunteer activities. A highlight of the initiative will be the launch of Rakan Masjid X Rakan Muda Ramadan during the MADANI Iftar with the Prime Minister on February 22, expected to gather about 10,000 visitors, particularly youth. The celebration aims for inclusivity with people of diverse races and backgrounds participating in the event.
