Melaka: A motorcyclist was killed while five others were injured in an accident involving three motorcycles and three cars at the Padang Jambu traffic light intersection here this afternoon. Melaka Tengah District Police Chief, Christopher Patit, confirmed that the victim, Mohd Shahrol Anuar Md Roby, 44, suffered fatal injuries to his head, face, body, and hands and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the incident occurred around 2:00 pm when a Perodua Myvi, operated by a 35-year-old man, veered into the opposite lane after the driver reportedly experienced 'microsleep' while traveling from Melaka City toward Bukit Beruang. This led to a collision with several vehicles halted at the traffic light intersection.
The victim, who was riding a Honda EX5 motorcycle, succumbed to serious injuries at the location. Two other motorcyclists, both 25 years old, sustained injuries to their right legs. Additionally, the driver of a Proton Saga, a 48-year-old woman, suffered injuries to her forehead and reported shoulder pain. The BMW driver involved in the collision escaped unscathed.
The Perodua Myvi driver, a logistics worker, only experienced abrasions on his elbow and it is suspected that he dozed off momentarily during the incident. Initial breathalyzer and drug tests for the Myvi driver returned negative results, although blood samples have been collected for further toxicology analysis.
Police have acquired dashboard camera footage from an independent witness who was present behind the involved vehicle. This recording will be instrumental in assisting with the ongoing investigation. Concurrently, the victim's body has been transferred to the Forensic Department of Melaka Hospital for an autopsy.
The vehicles implicated in the collision have been taken to the Malim Police Station before being forwarded to the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) in Alor Gajah for comprehensive inspection. Legal proceedings are underway, with the Myvi driver scheduled for a remand hearing at the Ayer Keroh Court tomorrow. The case is being pursued under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
