Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Digital is finalising an implementation plan for the National Data Repository (NDR), set to launch next year, as part of initiatives to enhance national data governance. Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said the initiative is a strategic measure under the MADANI Government’s agenda to position Malaysia as an AI-driven nation by 2030.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the data centre will enable the government to utilise information more efficiently for decision-making, policy planning, and enhancing the quality of services provided to the public. Key measures to be implemented include a comprehensive study of the current state and needs of the national data ecosystem, as well as the establishment of policies and guidelines for data governance at the national level.
Wilson made these remarks during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today, responding to a question from Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman (PN-Kubang Pasu) regarding the timeline for developing the NDR and when it is expected to be fully operational. The Deputy Minister added that the NDR implementation plan will also prioritise the development of data standards to ensure consistency across all government agencies.
Additionally, the plan will evaluate the capabilities of infrastructure and workforce skills in data management, alongside the development of the architecture and technology platforms to be utilised. This approach aims to ensure that all government systems can share data more securely and efficiently, while also boosting public confidence in how government information is managed.
Wilson elaborated on the role of the MyGOV Malaysia application, a flagship government initiative aimed at modernising public services and ensuring seamless digital access. The application relies on the NDR to serve as a national repository of high-quality data across multiple sectors. This integration enables MyGOV to display data and information from various agencies on a single platform, conduct proactive eligibility checks, and streamline the process of delivering aid to the public.
To ensure a secure and efficient integration between MyGOV and the NDR, key protocols will be enforced, including the use of verified data from trusted sources and the requirement for explicit user consent. Furthermore, the government will ensure data security measures are fully implemented in line with the Data Sharing Act 2025 (Act 864), including strict access controls over the data and all parties involved in its management.
