Kuala lumpur: The Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) has expressed serious concern over the proliferation of song lyrics containing obscene and indecent elements, which are seen as contrary to moral values and social decorum, especially given their potential negative influence on the younger generation, stated Minister Datuk Dr Zulkifli Hasan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister highlighted a particular song by a local female artiste while emphasizing that all artistes, producers, creators, and related parties need to adhere to the Guidelines for Entertainment in Islam (Second Edition). These guidelines were endorsed by the 107th National Fatwa Committee Muzakarah on February 10-11, 2015.
These guidelines mandate that entertainment lyrics must be devoid of obscene elements, immorality, insults, manipulation of sacred Islamic terms, and any content that contradicts syariah (Islamic jurisprudence) and humanitarian values. Zulkifli noted that Islam requires its followers to protect the sanctity of speech, hearing, and the heart, reminding that every word spoken should promote goodness and not undermine human dignity and morality.
Zulkifli further elaborated that while Islam appreciates artistic works and beauty, such expressions should aim to educate, calm the soul, and spread noble values. He underscored the responsibility of all involved in content creation to ensure their work aligns with decorum, culture, and syariah requirements.
He concluded by emphasizing that good entertainment should nurture the soul and strengthen morality rather than distract and corrupt. He hoped that this reminder would be received positively for the common good and the wellbeing of society. Recently, a local female singer’s latest song, alleged to contain obscene and inappropriate lyrics, has drawn negative reactions from netizens.
