PCG probes death of non-officer candidate during sports fest

MANILA: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is investigating the death of a Candidate Coast Guard Non-Officer (CCGNO) following a sports fest activity on Sunday.

PCG Commandant, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan directed the Coast Guard Education, Training and Doctrine Command (CGETDC) and the Coast Guard Inspector General and Internal Affairs Service (CGIC-IAS) to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the incident, according to a Monday news release by the PCG.

‘I have also instructed CGETDC to review existing training rules, regulations, and guidelines to ensure that the trainees’ health and welfare remain the utmost priority in all PCG regional training centers across the country,’ Gavan said.

According to PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo, the concerned individual fainted after a company run that ended at 8 a.m., and was part of the week-long Summer Sports Fest 2024 of the Coast Guard Non-Officers’ Course (CGNOC) Class 102-2023 at Regional Training Center (RTC)-Aurora in Barangay Mijares.

‘At 8:30 a
.m., he was brought to a hospital in Baler, Aurora to receive medical assistance. His attending physician recommended intubation and transfer to a hospital in Cabanatuan City for further medical care,’ Balilo said.

‘Upon arrival at 11:10 a.m. in Cabanatuan City, the attending physician monitored the CCGNO’s health condition and found unstable vital signs. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed, but he was declared dead by his attending physician at around 1:45 p.m.’
