Resignation From FAM Posts Suggested to Resolve Football Crisis

Kuala lumpur: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has been advised to take comprehensive steps to address ongoing issues within the country's football sector, including considering the resignation of its leadership.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, local football observer Datuk Richard Scully emphasized the importance of this move for the overall benefit of the sport. He described the decision as significant and necessary to alleviate the current tensions.

Scully noted, "A decision that should be respected and I think something needs to be done to defuse the current atmosphere. It's bittersweet. We're not talking about individuals, but a comprehensive approach needs to be taken if that's the best way forward. I am not sure, but I was informed that this may happen next week."

Scully expressed concern over the potential impact on grassroots football and local clubs, emphasizing the need for clarity and resolution. "I am worried that the situation will reach the lower levels," he added.

The crisis within FAM began in September last year following a confirmation by the International Football Association Board (FIFA) that the association and seven players were in violation of Article 22 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC). The players involved were Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Manchuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel.

Investigations revealed that FAM had submitted allegedly forged documents to confirm these players' eligibility, allowing them to participate in a 4-0 victory over Vietnam in the Group F of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers in June last year.

As a consequence, FAM was fined CHF350,000 (approximately RM1.8 million), while each player was fined CHF2,000 (approximately RM11,000). All involved were suspended from any football-related activities for 12 months.

FAM is currently awaiting the outcome of an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the FIFA Appeal Committee upheld the Disciplinary Committee's decision, rejecting FAM's previous appeal.

The document forgery issue has tarnished FAM's reputation and diminished public trust, leading to calls for the leadership to step down.
