Rural Development Ministry to determine immediate aid for flood victims in Terengganu, Kelantan

BANGI, Feb 28 — The Rural Development Ministry (KPLB) is determining the type of immediate assistance to provide flood victims in Terengganu and Kelantan, its Minister, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said.

He said the assistance that will be given to them will be similar to aid channelled those affected in Pahang and Selangor when the states were hit by floods previously.

He had instructed agencies under the ministry, including the Central Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah) and the Southern Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar) to take action to identify the type of immediate aid that could be channelled to affected victims.

“The ministry has also ordered the Village Development and Security Committees to take action and assist affected villagers under their care,” he told reporters after the “Know Before You Go” pre-departure event for students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) here today.

In terms of allocation, he said there were no special allocations announced for immediate aid so far.

“The floods that hit Kelantan and Terengganu were quite bad, there were bridges that were damaged.

“If it involves the ministry, we will arrange (the aid). Ministry directors in states will also see what they can do immediately. So, we will use existing allocations as this is an emergency,” he added.

Meanwhile, he announced that 99 MARA students will be sent to further their studies in renowned universities in the engineering field under the Young Talent Development Programme (YTP) starting this March.
