Melaka: Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad (SAMB) has introduced new water tariff rates, effective Aug 1, aimed at keeping the state’s water supply system sustainable, stable, and ready to meet future challenges. In a statement, SAMB said the adjustment was made without burdening the majority of domestic users, particularly the 312,396 registered households that use water prudently.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the adjustment also involves 48,788 non-domestic accounts involving business premises, industries, government agencies, charitable institutions, places of worship, shipping, and data centres, which will contribute more equitably to the cost of providing water services. The revised water supply tariff rates for Melaka are categorized into several segments including domestic residential, business/industry/government, places of worship/charitable institutions, shipping, and data centres.
For domestic residential users, the minimum charge is set at RM9.40, with rates varying based on consumption levels. Bus
iness and industrial users have a minimum charge of RM26.60, whereas places of worship and charitable institutions have a minimum charge of RM10.10. Shipping and data centres face higher minimum charges due to their consumption levels, set at RM80.20 and RM53.20 respectively.
SAMB stated that the adjustment would also cover the long-term investment costs needed to make Melaka’s water supply system more sustainable and capable of providing better services to all segments of the community. The adjustment will enable SAMB to expedite key strategic projects, including several water treatment plant expansions and upgrades.
The adjustment will also support the replacement and installation of new pipelines in various regions and improve sludge waste management systems at existing water treatment plants. These efforts are part of SAMB’s broader strategy to enhance the overall reliability and efficiency of Melaka’s water supply infrastructure.
