Manila: Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson announced that the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee will invite resigned Ako Bicol party-list Representative Elizaldy Co and former Speaker Martin Romualdez to its upcoming hearing concerning alleged corruption in anomalous flood control projects. Lacson, who chairs the panel, emphasized that this action aims to counter the perception that the committee is shielding certain individuals.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lacson stated that the committee will send an invitation letter to Co, who is currently abroad. Should Co fail to appear, the committee plans to issue a subpoena and a show-cause order. Lacson asserted that the committee is not protecting anyone and, if Co does not comply, he could be cited in contempt and face a warrant of arrest.
For Romualdez, the invitation will be sent through House Speaker Faustino Dy III, respecting the traditional inter-parliamentary courtesy between the two congressional houses. Lacson mentioned that while awaiting developments on the case, the committee is prepared to continue proceedings as long as new significant issues arise. He assured impartiality and commitment to follow the evidence, even if it implicates fellow lawmakers.
Lacson also addressed changes in the Independent Commission for Infrastructure, noting that former Philippine National Police chief Rodolfo Azurin’s appointment as an adviser, replacing Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, will not impact the panel’s work. Despite expressing regret over Magalong’s resignation, Lacson welcomed Azurin, citing his integrity and experience, having previously worked directly under him during his tenure as PNP head.
