Six aspiring students receive MCKL Excellence Award Scholarships

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 — Six pre-university students have been recently awarded the inaugural Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) Excellence Award Scholarship 2022 at the MCKL campus in Brickfields here.

MCKL said in a statement today that Marissa Haley, Mok Yen Qin, Wong Yue Qing, Tiffany Chiu Ke Sheun, Vanessa Chong Yi Wen and Jonah Yip Mathivanan were the first batch of recipients to receive the scholarship. They received their scholarships from MCKL chief executive officer Angela Pok during the award ceremony on Jan 14.

Mok, 18, who scored 2A* and 6A for her International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examination said the scholarship was a meaningful gift to her as it would lessen her family’s financial burden following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I was really surprised when I was told I received the award on Christmas eve,” she said.

Fellow recipient, Wong Yue Qing, 17, from Sri Emas International School, who achieved 5A* and 3A for her IGCSE exam and was now doing her Cambridge A-Levels said the award was an extraordinary achievement for her.

“It is because I feel a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders as my father’s restaurant business and income were severely affected by the pandemic,” she said.

Meanwhile, Angela Pok said in her speech that the MCKL Excellence Award Scholarship was established in line with the Methodist education philosophy to provide deserving students access to quality education to achieve their aspirations.

“We are glad that this scholarship will help many students and their families in the years to come as the pandemic and other economic issues have posed challenges for them to further their education and achieve their dream careers,” she said.

First introduced at the end of 2021, the MCKL Excellence Award Scholarship was established to provide financial aid and help families with aspiring Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and IGCSE school leavers who excelled in both academics and extra-curricular activities and have proven themselves as exceptional role models to gain access to quality pre-university and undergraduate programmes.

All SPM and IGCSE school leavers who fulfill the criteria and wish to enroll in the upcoming intake will be able to apply for the MCKL Excellence Award Scholarship 2022.
