The Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, today launched a tree planting programme along Pantai Batu Buruk and Pantai Pandak here.
The programme, a collaboration between Petronas and the Terengganu government, was held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee of the reign of Sultan Mizan.
Also present were state Secretary Datuk Seri Tengku Farok Husin Tengku Abdul Jalil and state Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman Dr Azman Ibrahim.
Petronas East Coast general manager Mohammad Ahmad Shazly Ramli said as many as 3,000 trees of various species were planted along the beach in an effort to preserve environmental sustainability.
He said the tree planting programme along the 11.3-kilometre (km) area is also in line with Petronas’ aspirations towards Net Zero Carbon Emissions (NZCE) by 2050 and the campaign to plant 100 million trees under the Greening Malaysia programme.
“This initiative is also in line with Petronas’ target to plant one million trees nationwide by 2027. Among the tree species planted are ‘ketapang’, casuarina, coconut and ‘ambung-ambung’ which function as erosion prevention as well as buffers from destruction due to natural disasters,” he said.
