Skudai: Malaysia's largest private quaternary hospital, Sunway Medical Centre (SMC), has reached a significant milestone by completing its 100th robotic spine surgery using the AiBLES Spine Surgical Suite.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the AiBLES Spine Surgical Suite, launched in February 2025, represents an advanced generation of robotic guidance for spine surgery, known for its precision, consistency, and efficiency. This achievement underscores SMC's strong clinical interest and positions it as a pioneer in adopting AiBLES technology in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia.
The suite is designed to assist in surgical planning and intraoperative navigation for spine procedures. It provides surgeons with detailed three-dimensional planning before surgery and real-time guidance during operations. The AiBLE technology aims to improve implant placement accuracy, support minimally invasive procedures, reduce intraoperative and post-operative complications, and minimize radiation exposure. This initiative is part of SMC's continuous efforts to enhance access to quality spine care for Malaysians.
SMC's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Seow Vei Ken, highlighted that the 100th procedure milestone reflects the hospital's strength, collaboration, and technological advancement in its Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre. By integrating the AiBLES suite with existing high-end MRI and CT imaging systems, clinicians can better address complex spinal cases. Dr. Seow emphasized that this achievement is a testament to the hospital's multidisciplinary teams and their commitment to innovation, clinical excellence, and positive patient outcomes.
Following this success, SMC was recently acknowledged as the top hospital in Malaysia and internationally ranked among the World's Best Smart Hospitals 2026 by Newsweek. This ranking recognizes hospitals that excel in utilizing technology such as AI, digital imaging, and robotics to enhance patient care.
To commemorate this milestone, SMC hosted an event to highlight the impact of this technology on patient care. Notably, SMC is the first private hospital in Malaysia to secure three major hospital-wide accreditations: the Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation Gold Seal of Approval from the United States, and accreditation from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.
