Terengganu Archers Hit Bullseye At SUKMA 2024

KUCHING, Terengganu’s archers hit the bullseye at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), dominating the archery events with precision and skill to take home the most medals at the Petra Jaya Archery Range here.

The Terengganu squad showcased their marksmanship by securing five gold medals, one silver and one bronze, leaving their competitors trailing. The Federal Territories (FT) followed with two golds, three silvers, and two bronzes, while Perak clinched two golds and five bronzes during the six-day competition that kicked off on Aug 19.

Reflecting on the team’s triumph, Terengganu archery coach, Lutfil Hadi, attributed their success to rigorous training in windy conditions, which gave his archers a crucial edge in adapting to the challenging weather during the competition.

‘Kuala Terengganu’s windy climate and frequent weather changes have toughened our archers, helping them stay focused and steady, even when faced with unpredictable winds during tournaments like SUKMA.

‘Alhamdulillah, our archers surpassed
the target set by the State Sports Council. The young archers delivered outstanding performances, and as we look ahead to future SUKMAs. Half of our current squad remain eligible to compete,’ he told reporters here.

Lutfil said the state’s archery squad has launched various grassroots programmes to scout for new talent in preparation for future competitions, including SUKMA.

Looking ahead to SUKMA 2026, to be hosted by Selangor, he said the team will be undergoing an intensive two-week training programme.

Overall, Terengganu’s archers struck gold in the Women’s 50m Compound Individual, Men’s 70m Recurve Individual, Mixed Recurve, Mixed Compound and Men’s Compound Team events.
