KUALA LUMPUR: Three local men, including a teenager, have been apprehended for allegedly stealing a Public Gold automated teller machine (ATM) from a supermarket in Ampang, only to discover that the machine contained no gold bars. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail disclosed that the suspects likely employed a truck driver to aid in transporting the ATM using the vehicle. A complaint was filed with the police at 9:50 a.m. on November 23 concerning the ATM's unauthorized removal. It was revealed that the machine was empty of gold bars, with the estimated loss amounting to RM60,000 for the machine itself. Investigations conducted by the Ampang Jaya District Headquarters Crime Division (IPD) resulted in the arrest of three suspects, aged between 17 and 41, in locations around the capital and Kajang, Selangor, from November 26 to the present. The police conducted urine tests on the suspects, discovering that one tested positive for Methamphetamine and Amphet amine. The suspect with a positive drug test also has an extensive criminal history, with 54 past criminal records, including three related to criminal and drug offenses. He will be remanded for four days starting today, while the other two suspects have been granted police bail. The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which stipulates a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine upon conviction.
