Woman and Grandson Perish in Devastating Bintulu Fire

Bintulu: A woman and her grandson were tragically killed in a fire that ravaged a two-storey workers' quarters of a shipping company on Jalan Nyigu early today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) reported that a team from the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched following a distress call received at 1.01 am. The team arrived at the scene at 1.10 am to find the fire engulfing a block of a non-permanent structure consisting of 28 doors, with an estimated area of 30.48 x 9.144 square metres, completely destroyed by flames.

In the incident, 61-year-old Taun Nyaring and his 14-year-old grandson, Melbourne Jeasy, were found deceased at the scene at 4.20 am. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to the police for further action. The fire also resulted in the destruction of four motorcycles. The firefighting operation concluded at 5.30 am, and the department is currently investigating the cause of the fire and the extent of the losses incurred.
