1,028 pass DILG’s 1st Seal of Good Local Governance for Barangay

MANILA: A total of 1,028 villages nationwide qualified for the first-ever Seal of Good Local Governance for Barangay (SGLGB) of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

In a news release Thursday, DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. said the 2023 SGLGB is a performance assessment and recognition system designed to distinguish barangays with outstanding performance across various governance areas.

The SGLGB assessment covered 39,623 barangays nationwide, with 1,028 or only 2.59 percent meeting the stringent qualifications.

The regions of Ilocos, Caraga and Eastern Visayas had the most SGLGB passers with 135, 132, and 102 barangays, respectively.

‘Congratulations to the 1,028 barangays across the country who responded to the call for excellence in public service and bagged the 2023 SGLGB. Salamat sa pangunguna ninyo sa pagtataas ng antas ng paglilingkod-bayan sa ating mga pamayanan (Thank you for leading the enhancement of the quality of public service for our people),’ Abalos added.

The
DILG shall present the passers with a Certificate of Recognition.

Abalos also encouraged provincial, city, and municipal governments to give rewards or incentives to their respective barangays who passed the SGLGB.

The SGLGB utilized the ‘3+1 principle’ where prospective passers must adhere to three core governance areas, namely financial administration and sustainability; disaster preparedness; and safety and peace and order.

Barangays must also pass at least one of the essential governance areas such as social protection and sensitivity; business-friendliness and competitiveness; and environmental management.

Abalos, meanwhile, hoped that more barangays would make it to the list of SGLGB qualifiers for this year.
