12 Cloud Seeding Operations Conducted to Combat Transboundary Haze in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur:A total of 12 cloud seeding operations were executed in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak from August 30 to October 23 to alleviate the effects of transboundary haze on air quality.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, these operations were carried out by the Malaysian Meteorological Department in partnership with the National Disaster Management Agency and the Royal Malaysian Air Force. The operations targeted the northern, central, and southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as Sarawak, during the haze episode.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability reported that the cloud seeding efforts successfully induced rainfall in several targeted areas, helping to increase water levels in dams and lessen the haze's impact. This information was shared in response to a query from Datuk Larry Soon regarding the government's strategies to address haze from open burning in neighboring countries.

Furthermore, the ministry highlighted the activation of the National Open Burning Action Plan and the National Haze Action Plan to prevent and reduce the haze effects. Investigations conducted with the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities have not revealed any official information or evidence connecting Malaysian-related plantation companies to fires in Indonesia. However, the government emphasized the seriousness of any such allegations and the importance of examining any presented evidence in cooperation with relevant authorities.
