129 Filipinos in Laos seek help amid cyber scam crackdown

MANILA: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday said 129 Filipinos have sought government assistance following the crackdown on a suspected scam hub in Laos.

In a statement, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza said the DFA has sent seven of them home while about 75 more would be repatriated.

‘The DFA has been working round-the-clock since last week when the crackdown on illegal companies within the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ) located in Bokeo Province, Lao PDR commenced,’ she said.

She added that the Philippine Embassy in Vientiane is working with Lao authorities and has sent a team to Bokeo province to facilitate the release of distressed overseas Filipinos from the GTSEZ.

The DFA is funding their flights from Bokeo to Vientiane and onward to the Philippines, including accommodation, food, and basic needs.

‘The team stands ready to assist Filipinos who may still be remaining in the Golden Triangle and will continue to work with Lao authorities to ensure their safet
y,’ she added.

Local reports said more than 700 foreign nationals were arrested on Aug. 12 at the GTSEZ, which has become associated with illicit activities, including alleged online scam operations and trafficking of foreign nationals lured on false promises of legitimate work.
