Sukma: A total of 132 athletes who competed at the 2026 Selangor Malaysia Games (SUKMA) have been identified as potential candidates for the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia. Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari announced that the athletes, comprising 59 men and 73 women, were selected based on an initial assessment throughout the Games. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Mohammed Taufiq stated that these athletes would be continuously monitored and assessed on various criteria, including performance, consistency, fitness, injury status, and their achievements at national and international levels. The evaluation will also consider the specific requirements of each sporting event. Looking forward, Dr Mohammed Taufiq emphasized that the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), in collaboration with the National Sports Council (NSC) and other stakeholders, would review and strengthen the biennial sporting event. This review aims to develop athlete talent, enhance competition standards, advance coach deve lopment, utilize performance data and sports science, and create pathways for athletes to engage in national development programs. Dr Mohammed Taufiq highlighted the importance of these efforts to ensure that SUKMA remains an effective platform for developing high-performance athletes who can achieve international success. He noted that the Games have once again showcased Malaysia's vast pool of sporting talent and stressed the ministry's role in nurturing this talent through a robust support system and clear performance pathways. In his statement, Dr Mohammed Taufiq also congratulated the Terengganu track cycling team and Selangor swimmer Eliza Ai Shen Tan for breaking national records at this year's SUKMA. The Terengganu team, consisting of Nur Aieris Madhiah, Dahlia Hazwani, Ameera Alya, and Nur Aierin Wadhiah, set a new national record in the team pursuit. Eliza broke the national record in the women's 100-metre freestyle twice, securing a gold medal. Dr Mohammed Taufiq further expressed gratitude to t he Selangor state government, Selangor State Sports Council, national sports associations, state contingents, and all parties involved in the successful organization of Selangor SUKMA 2026, which took place from Aug 15 to 24. He also congratulated Selangor on becoming the overall champions with a total of 101 gold, 73 silver, and 71 bronze medals.
