Kuala lumpur: A total of 199 Public Works Department (JKR) projects have undergone the Green Rating Assessment (pH) as of last year, leading to a significant 44 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, equivalent to 1.53 million kilogrammes of carbon dioxide annually. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi highlighted the adoption of the Green Product Scoring System (GPSS) in 46 building and 44 road projects to promote the use of environmentally friendly products.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, as of this year, 52 projects have received the JKR sustainable development rating, including 49 road projects. Minister Nanta emphasized this as a starting point, expressing hope that more government, private sector, and local authority projects would embrace these standards in the future. Speaking at the JKR pH Day 2026 programme, he underscored JKR's commitment to embedding sustainable development as a core principle in government asset projects.
Minister Nanta asserted that sustainability must guide the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of government assets. This commitment aligns with Malaysia's MADANI aspiration to implement national policies and development initiatives in a responsible, ethical, inclusive, and sustainable manner, benefitting the long-term interests of the people.
He pointed out that JKR's responsibilities extend beyond developing infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of meeting the highest standards of quality, safety, and sustainability. Nanta highlighted the legacy-building aspect of sustainable development, aiming for projects that endure for generations rather than merely meeting deadlines.
Minister Nanta also noted the importance of standards, which reflect an organisation's commitment to excellence and serve to enhance public confidence in government services. The event saw the launch of several initiatives, including the JKR Sustainable Development Policy, JKR/SIRIM 2:2025 Green Rating for Buildings Standard, and the JKR e-pH System, all aimed at strengthening governance, standardizing practices, accelerating digital transformation, and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of green rating implementation.
