Gerik: A total of 252 officers and personnel from the Malaysian Army (TDM) and the Royal Thai Army (RTA) are enhancing their tactical skills and joint operational capabilities through Exercise LAND THAMAL Series 29/2026, which has been taking place in Gerik since August 5.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Headquarters of the 2nd Malaysian Infantry Division stated today that the exercise involves 197 TDM personnel and 55 from the RTA, providing an opportunity for both militaries to share knowledge and experience while improving interoperability and understanding of joint tactical procedures.
The statement noted that LAND THAMAL Series 29/2026 is carried out across three main phases: Cross Training Exercise (CTX), Field Training Exercise (FTX), and Combined Military Civil Action (CMCA).
"The implementation of the field training exposes personnel from both countries to various tactical aspects, including combat procedures, obstacle crossing, base setup, patrolling, ambushes, and attacks on enemy camps.
"Throughout its implementation, this exercise places emphasis on training and enhancing knowledge as well as sharing tactical capabilities through the exchange of ideas and experiences, strengthening cooperation and understanding of tactical procedures, and cementing working relationships through a spirit of cooperation and communication between both armed forces," said the statement.
The statement added that Exercise LAND THAMAL Series 29/2026 was officially launched on August 5 through an Opening Ceremony at the Gerik Airstrip, jointly officiated by the Commander of the 30th Malaysian Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Datuk Mohd Zaini Hashim, and 5th Infantry Brigade Commander, Senior Colonel Taweeporn Kanatong.
During the ceremony, Taweeporn emphasised that LAND THAMAL not only serves to strengthen bilateral relations between Malaysia and Thailand, but also enhances the capabilities of both countries to face various challenges.
These challenges include natural disasters, security threats, conflicts, and regional security issues through close cooperation and a high level of mutual understanding.
According to the statement, the success of LAND THAMAL Series 29/2026 reflects the strong professional relationship and mutual understanding between TDM and RTA.
"This exercise not only improves interoperability and operational readiness, but also provides a space for personnel from both countries to build trust, share experiences, and understand each other's operational methods."
"The organisation of LAND THAMAL will continue to be an important platform in strengthening Malaysia-Thailand defence relations, thereby contributing to joint efforts in preserving border security as well as regional peace and stability," according to the statement.
The statement added that at the same time, the implementation of CMCA through the Jiwa Murni Programme highlights the dimension of military-community relations as personnel from both countries joined hands to carry out community activities at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Idris Shah II, Gerik.
