47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur to Host Global Leaders

Kuala lumpur: The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, scheduled for October in Kuala Lumpur, is poised to be one of the most significant gatherings in the association's history, as announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, several global leaders from outside the ASEAN region have confirmed their attendance for the summit, occurring from October 26 to 28. Confirmed attendees include Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Brazilian President Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva, whose participation was solidified following Anwar's meeting with Meloni in Rome on July 3.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, currently holding the G20 presidency, has also shown interest in attending the summit. Additionally, newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed his participation, as revealed by Anwar during the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Anwar emphasized the potential vibrancy of the October summit, which promises to engage not only ASEAN and its regular partners such as Japan, South Korea, and China, but also a broader array of international leaders. He expressed confidence in the summit's success, noting, "I believe it will be a major undertaking... God willing, we will be able to shoulder it together."

ASEAN's current member states include Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines. The summits traditionally welcome partners like Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, and the United States.

During the BRICS Business Forum on July 5, President Lula da Silva reiterated his commitment to attending the 47th ASEAN Summit and encouraged Brazilian entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity presented by this significant business platform.

The previous 46th ASEAN Summit, held in Kuala Lumpur last May, featured the second ASEAN-GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.
