500 runners to join Labuan Scoliosis Awareness Run 2022

LABUAN, July 26 (Bernama) — A total of 500 participants will join the Labuan Scoliosis Run 2022 to promote awareness of issues concerning scoliosis, this Sunday (July 31).

The 5.6km run is jointly organised by the Labuan Orthopaedic Club, the Labuan Health Department and Labuan Society as well as JHK Event.

Labuan Orthopaedic Club is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting community well-being and providing spine-related health services for those suffering from scoliosis issues.

Themed ‘Bent but not broken’, a number of educational booths will be set up during the run to give participants and members of the public the chance to learn about scoliosis.

With statistics showing that scoliosis issues affect many Malaysians as well as a worrying trend of an increasing number of individuals suffering from this medical condition, the Labuan Orthopaedic Club believes that awareness, understanding and managing scoliosis can help in the detection, managing and prevention of this medical condition.

The club, in a statement, said that creating awareness through events like the Labuan Scoliosis Run could enable people to learn about scoliosis and possibly allow more people to detect symptoms in others.

“We are active all year round but our focus is on raising awareness of scoliosis issues,” the club said.

It said that scoliosis is a deformation of the spine in which it is curved either S-shaped or C-shaped curvature and it is common among adolescents.

“It is not broken, but only curved, therefore, the Labuan Orthopaedic Club is organising this awareness run and carnival to educate the society,” read the statement.

While scoliosis can occur in people with conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most childhood scoliosis is unknown, and most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some curves worsen as children grow.
