500-year-old banyan tree in Then Sin commune recognized as national heritage tree


A 500-year-old banyan tree (known locally as ‘cay da’, a fig that develops accessory trunks from adjacent prop roots, allowing the tree to spread outwards indefinitely) in Then Sin commune has witnessed the history of the ethnic communities in Lai Chau province. The ancient banyan tree possesses magnificent and majestic beauty with a circumference of 10,6m and a base diameter of 3,37m; a height 21,2m; the foliage is luxuriant, shading an area of more than 170m wide. According to Vietnamese myths, banyan tree is the home of gods, protecting villagers and giving them luck. The ancient tree in Then Sin commune, Tam Duong district has recently been recognized as Vietnam heritage tree, for it has survived through different time periods and carried spiritual and cultural meaning for local communities.
