Melaka: The Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) has impounded 85 luxury vehicles as part of Op Luxury, an operation conducted from January 2025 until last Tuesday, January 27, to ensure adherence to road transport regulations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Melaka JPJ director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop stated that the vehicles were seized under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Among the impounded vehicles, 17 were seized in January this year. The primary offences involved expired road tax and insurance coverage, with 76 cases reported. Other offences included expired road tax with valid insurance (five cases), foreign drivers without a competent driving licence (CDL) (three cases), and one instance of displaying another vehicle's registration number. A total of 579 luxury vehicles were inspected during the operation.
Siti Zarina noted that Mercedes-Benz vehicles accounted for the highest number of seizures, with 20 units, followed by Toyota Vellfire (16), BMW (12), Toyota Alphard (10), and other luxury vehicles. JPJ also discovered vehicles with road tax expired for over five years, including a Toyota Vellfire and a Toyota Alphard with road taxes lapsed since 2021.
In an integrated operation last night, 395 vehicles were inspected, and 120 were found to have committed various offences, resulting in 244 notices being issued. JPJ recorded the highest number of JPJ (P) 22 summon notices at 210, with 186 notices issued to motorcyclists. Additionally, 14 notices to prevent vehicle use (PG1) and 17 inspection order notices under Section 61(1) were issued.
Siti Zarina mentioned that four motorcycles and a car were seized during the operation for offences such as expired road tax and lack of insurance coverage. Inspections by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) revealed that two individuals tested positive for methamphetamine out of 14 screened. The Department of Environment (DOE) issued three compounds for noise offences involving six vehicles, which did not meet prescribed standards.
