Abang Johari Calls On Kuching City Councils To Advance Digital Transformation

Kuching: The Sarawak government has urged Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to adopt more technology-based approaches in developing the city, as part of its goal to make Sarawak the region's leading digital economy by 2030. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that this move is essential to ensure Kuching remains relevant as a sustainable and inclusive smart city, guided by the Sarawak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 (SDE 2030).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Premier's speech was delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at Kuching City Day's 37th anniversary celebration. The Premier emphasized that DBKU and MBKS must be prepared for advances in the digital economy and technology to keep pace with global developments. Sarawak is on track to lead digital transformation under SDE 2030 through initiatives such as investments in artificial intelligence and the expansion of cross-border data flows to attract digital investments.

The Premier highlighted the importance of local authorities' roles, urging DBKU and MBKS to support the Sarawak Sustainability Master Plan 2030, launched in May, to aid in building a low-carbon, climate-resilient state. In line with this year's theme, 'Smart City of Unity, Embracing a Sustainable Future,' both councils have been encouraged to adapt their policies, service delivery, and community engagement approaches to meet the demands of the digital era and climate change challenges.

He noted that, as a city administered by two local authorities, Kuching has its unique character and plays a significant role in advancing the state's development aspirations. The event was also attended by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, and Kuching North Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman.
