ABIM Advocates UN Oversight for US-Iran Ceasefire Compliance

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) has proposed the establishment of an independent and transparent monitoring mechanism under the United Nations (UN) to ensure compliance with the ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Its president, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, emphasized the need for all parties to demonstrate clear, consistent political will devoid of hidden agendas in implementing the ceasefire.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Fahmi stated that any violation of this ceasefire would breach the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, particularly the prohibition of the use of force in international relations. He warned that failure to act consistently and without selectivity could erode trust in the global governance system and reinforce perceptions of geopolitical hypocrisy.

ABIM has called for strengthened diplomatic efforts to build trust between the United States and Iran, paving the way for a more comprehensive, just, and lasting peace agreement. Ahmad Fahmi highlighted the importance of this approach for regional stability and global peace, noting its implications for energy security and the stability of strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Ahmad Fahmi also called for an immediate halt to all forms of provocation, threats, misleading narratives, and military actions that could undermine the ceasefire. He included ongoing actions by the Zionist Israeli regime in Palestine and surrounding areas in this call. He stressed that any peace efforts in West Asia would be meaningless without a just resolution to the Palestinian issue, which remains the root cause of regional instability.

He further stated that the conflict involving Iran cannot be viewed in isolation from developments in Lebanon, which have become an extension of regional tensions. Continued violations of sovereignty and attacks by the Zionist Israeli regime demonstrate that a piecemeal approach would only shift and expand the conflict to other areas. Ahmad Fahmi warned that selective peace is fragile and risks further escalation and deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region.

ABIM insists that any regional peace framework must be comprehensive, including the cessation of violations in Lebanon, the end of occupation in Palestine, and a genuine commitment by all parties to end violence in all its forms. Ahmad Fahmi urged that the world in the 21st century cannot remain trapped in outdated conflict paradigms that cost innocent lives and undermine the foundations of humanity. He called for Malaysia to continue playing an active role through multilateral diplomacy, including within ASEAN, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the United Nations, to support principled and just de-escalation efforts.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of military operations against Iran following mediation efforts. In response, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran would halt defensive operations if attacks against the country ceased.
