Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) has acknowledged the government's initiatives to maintain petrol subsidies but has emphasized the need for improved policy communication. Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, president of ABIM, highlighted the importance of transparency in conveying the rationale and real impact of government measures, especially in light of the temporary adjustment to the Budi MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) programme.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Fahmi stressed that effective policies should protect both the majority and vulnerable groups to ensure fairness beyond numerical measures. He stated that fairness in policy should address the needs of all groups, particularly during challenging times. Ahmad Fahmi emphasized that policy responsibility requires refinement and courage to prevent any segment from being left behind.
Ahmad Fahmi acknowledged the government's efforts to stabilize petrol prices and implement support measures such as cash assistance and logistics sector aid. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently announced a temporary adjustment to BUDI95 eligibility, reducing the monthly limit from 300 litres to 200 litres starting April 1, 2026, due to the conflict in West Asia. This decision was based on a review showing that nearly 90 percent of the population uses less than 200 litres per month, minimizing the impact on most users.
Ahmad Fahmi further elaborated on the broader implications of subsidy policies, emphasizing that they should be seen as instruments of social justice. He pointed out that indirect effects, such as rising logistics costs, can significantly impact people's daily lives. He cautioned against oversimplifying the targeted approach to subsidy eligibility, noting that some high petrol users are economically productive, including those in the logistics sector and small enterprises.
He also highlighted the importance of public discourse based on factual information, considering the real implications of policy changes. Ahmad Fahmi urged the public to practice discipline and prudence in energy consumption.
In addition, he expressed support for the Prime Minister's diplomatic efforts to ease international tensions, advocating for peace and fairness at the global level as essential components of long-term solutions.
