ABIM Proposes Government Creates Guidelines For Sensitive Community Events

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) has put forward a proposal for the creation of an inter-ministerial committee tasked with drafting national guidelines for community events that involve sensitive issues. This proposal aims to address various aspects such as branding, programme content, the transparency of registered associations' mandates, and ensuring these events align with public values and interests.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, ABIM President Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin emphasized the importance of this initiative in bolstering the country's governance. He highlighted the need to prevent public confusion and anxiety that may arise from community programmes adopting sensitive approaches or branding. The proposal includes establishing clearer regulatory requirements for various types of events, particularly those that are closed, held overnight, or themed around health or social issues that could impact moral and social harmony.

Ahmad Fahmi clarified that the intent behind this move is not to restrict civic space or penalize any group. Instead, it serves as a preventive and prudent governance measure to ensure public health issues are not exploited as a means for identity advocacy or to normalize values that conflict with societal foundations and the national Constitution.

In Malaysia's multicultural context, Ahmad Fahmi noted that public health awareness campaigns should consider sociocultural realities, religious norms, and existing legal frameworks to ensure the focus remains on public well-being. This follows media reports about the 'Glamping With Pride' event, a private, community-based retreat centered on wellbeing, peer support, and health awareness, which faced opposition but is set to continue.
