AGC Granted Leave to Initiate Contempt Proceedings Against Shafie Apdal and Mona Din

Kuala lumpur: The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has been granted leave to initiate contempt of court proceedings against former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and social media influencer Che Muna Din, known as Mona Din. The proceedings are related to alleged statements made by the two concerning the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan granted the leave following submissions from deputy public prosecutors Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalan and Nadia Mohd Izhar. The court that oversaw the inquest into Zara Qairina's death was informed that both respondents will be served with cause papers within two weeks, after which a hearing date will be set. The ex parte application reveals that a show cause notice was served to Mohd Shafie on September 23, while Mona Din received hers on September 10. The AGC, acting as the applicant, reported that Mohd Shafie, who is also the president of Parti Warisan, responded through his solicitors, Messrs Tommy Thomas, on September 29. Mohamad Mustaffa stated, "It is submitted that although the respondent has provided the said letter of reply and has not in any way denied making the statement contained in the said posting, he has failed to provide a satisfactory explanation in response to the show cause notice under Order 52 Rule 2B of the Rules of Court 2012." He disclosed that Mohd Shafie's statements, shared via a Facebook post under the name 'Shafie Apdal,' amounted to contempt of court. In contrast, Mona Din responded with a statutory declaration dated September 19, in which she offered her apologies for her statements.
