Kuala lumpur: The Attorney General's Chambers has turned down a representation submitted by rapper and filmmaker Namewee, who sought a review of two charges concerning the possession of drugs and sildenafil. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal conveyed this decision during proceedings before Magistrate Nurul Izzah Hasan Basri.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the court has now set May 29 for mention regarding the case. Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, had hoped the representation would lead to the withdrawal of charges or a reduction to lesser offences.
The first charge against the 43-year-old involves the possession of 1.57 grams of methamphetamine, discovered in a hotel room on Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur, at approximately 4.30 pm on October 22 of the previous year. This charge falls under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carrying a penalty under Section 12(3) which includes a maximum fine of RM100,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
Additionally, Namewee faces a second charge for possessing 0.78 grams of sildenafil at the same location, date, and time. This charge comes under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952, with penalties specified under Section 32(2), which include a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
Notably, on December 22 of the previous year, Namewee was acquitted of a separate charge relating to the self-administration of a dangerous drug after the prosecution withdrew the charge, citing negative pathology test results.
