Ageing Population, KL Housing Project Moratorium Among Key Topics in Parliament

Kuala lumpur: The government's preparations to address the ageing population phenomenon and a proposal for a moratorium on residential projects in Kuala Lumpur are among the significant issues set to be discussed during today's Dewan Rakyat sitting.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Order Papers on Parliament's official website indicate that Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru) will question the Minister of Economy about strategies to tackle the ageing population and the projected trends in population growth, births, deaths, and marriages over the forthcoming decade during the Ministers' Question Time.

Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong) plans to ask the Prime Minister if there are intentions to enforce a moratorium on residential projects in Kuala Lumpur. This is attributed to data from the Department of Statistics, which forecasts the city's population peak in 2031, significantly ahead of the national projection timeline by 28 years.

Additionally, Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (PN-Tanah Merah) is expected to inquire from the Minister of Defence about the ownership details of the AW149 helicopter assembly plant, which will be constructed in Batu Berendam, Melaka, by Leonardo with government funding. The inquiry also seeks to confirm if the Ministry of Defence was consulted before the approval of this construction plan.

Wong Shu Qi (PH-Kluang) will address the Prime Minister regarding the number of complaints filed through the Public Complaints Management System (SISPAA) from 2018 up to June 30, 2025. She aims to identify the main reasons behind the three agencies that recorded the highest number of complaints during this period.

Furthermore, Datuk Willie Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo) will question the Foreign Minister on the ministry's latest evaluation of armed conflicts in the Middle East. He seeks clarity on whether Malaysia intends to reassess its foreign policy in the region to protect its economic, security, and national interests.

Following the oral question-and-answer session, the Dewan Rakyat will move forward with the second reading of bills, including the Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the National Registration (Amendment) Bill 2025. The current session of Dewan Rakyat, which commenced on July 21, is slated to conclude on August 28.
