Ahmad Zahid Praises SMART’s 30-Year Contribution to Malaysia

Kuala lumpur: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has praised the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) for its outstanding service over the past 30 years, noting its role in enhancing Malaysia's reputation on the global stage. The Deputy Prime Minister said SMART has contributed to the safety of people in Malaysia and overseas through its participation in search and rescue operations as well as humanitarian missions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid highlighted SMART's involvement in significant missions, including post-earthquake rescue efforts in Trkiye and Nepal, humanitarian operations during the tsunami in Aceh, and major flood relief work in Selangor, Pahang, and Kelantan. He emphasized that SMART has consistently been at the forefront during critical moments for the nation.

Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as the National Disaster Management Committee chairman, made these remarks in a Facebook post celebrating SMART's 30th anniversary. He lauded the team for being the first in Southeast Asia to achieve the 'Heavy' classification for urban search and rescue operations from the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), which has boosted Malaysia's standing in the international rescue network.

Furthermore, he noted that SMART has gained the trust of Russia to mentor its search and rescue team, RUS-03, in preparation for INSARAG evaluation. Ahmad Zahid expressed his admiration for the team's dedication, discipline, and continuous adaptation of advanced technology, stating that SMART is now recognized and respected as more than just an elite team.

He concluded by expressing hope that the SMART team will continue to progress, remain ready to face future challenges, and maintain its presence at the forefront of any disaster. Ahmad Zahid extended his gratitude and congratulations to SMART for three decades of excellence serving the people and the nation.
