AI and Automation Transform Occupational Safety Landscape: NIOSH

Kuala lumpur: Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and digital systems are now changing the occupational safety and health (OSH) risk profile, requiring employers to be more proactive in identifying new risks before they affect workers. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman Chong Chieng Jen emphasized that while technology has the potential to enhance workplace safety, it simultaneously presents new challenges that must be addressed.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chong stated that technology alters the risk landscape by introducing issues such as human-machine interaction, reliance on automated systems, digital ergonomics, worker monitoring, cognitive workload, fatigue, and stress. These changes impact not only traditional workplaces but also workers in the gig economy, digital platforms, and those in flexible or hybrid arrangements, where the line between work and personal life becomes increasingly blurred.

Chong highlighted the need for adapting OSH approaches to accommodate the evolving nature of work, as some workers are no longer part of traditional workplace structures. He urged that technology should not only be seen as a source of risk but also as a tool for OSH solutions, such as AI in fatigue monitoring and discussions on hybrid work and psychosocial safety.

He noted that occupational risks are becoming more complex and less physically identifiable. While traditional OSH focused on tangible risks like machinery and chemicals, current discussions include work-related stress, burnout, and technology-related risks. Positive shifts are occurring, with a focus on prevention and well-being rather than mere compliance.

These developments will be key topics at the 26th Conference and Exhibition on Occupational Safety and Health (COSH) 2026, scheduled for September 14-15 in Kuala Lumpur. Themed 'Well-being at Work', COSH 2026 will explore AI, mental health, psychosocial safety, ergonomics, hazardous substance exposure, and the future workforce.

Chong hopes COSH 2026 will inspire participants to return with actionable ideas or solutions for their workplaces. The event will gather government, industry, OSH practitioners, researchers, and experts to exchange knowledge and solutions for current OSH challenges.
