Kuala lumpur: The Digital Ministry, through the Personal Data Protection Department, is developing artificial intelligence (AI) based guidelines that are expected to be completed in early 2026, its minister Gobind Singh Deo said. These include guidelines on Data Protection Impact Assessment; Data Protection by Design guidelines; and guidelines on Automated Decision Making (ADM) and Profiling, he added.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, these initiatives by the Digital Ministry aim to combat online scams as such fraud is now driven by AI like deepfake videos and voice cloning. Gobind Singh Deo reiterated his ministry's commitment to stepping up efforts to develop a safe, responsible, and resilient AI ecosystem, aligning with Malaysia's goal to become a regional pioneer in digital economy and cyber security.

The National Digital Department is also in the process of creating Guidelines for AI Adaptation in the Public Sector. This initiative is designed to support government departments and agencies in implementing safe, ethical, and responsible use of AI, in compliance with legal governance and human rights standards.

Gobind highlighted that the government is conducting training and capacity-building programs for enforcement agencies and the civil service in cyber security and AI fields. These programs are being implemented through 'AI Untuk Rakyat' and MD Workforce training initiatives under the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

Additionally, CyberSecurity Malaysia, in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), is developing an AI-based application. This app is intended to verify the authenticity of photos and videos, which will aid in cyber crime investigations such as online scams, identity theft, and the spread of digital slander.
