Kuala Lumpur: ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) president Tan Sri Johari Abdul has delivered a compelling call for enhanced female and youth participation in various sectors to foster inclusive nation-building within the ASEAN region. Emphasizing the crucial roles that women and youth play, Johari advocated for their increased involvement in leadership, politics, and decision-making processes, asserting they are vital for constructing a sustainable and people-centered ASEAN.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Johari highlighted Malaysia's progress in women's involvement, particularly in the public sector's supporting services and education, where participation has likely exceeded 50 percent. However, he acknowledged the underrepresentation of women in other critical fields, especially politics, and underscored the importance of empowering young women to assume leadership roles.
Johari, who also serves as the Dewan Rakyat Speaker, called for the empowerment of youth as future leaders, stressing the necessity of incorporating their aspirations into all sectors, including politics, the economy, social development, and education. He affirmed the commitment of ASEAN leaders and AIPA member parliaments to fostering a more inclusive, sustainable, and people-centered regional community.
In a statement, the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives noted Johari's commendation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership as ASEAN Chair. The statement emphasized the need for strong collaboration between the executive and legislative branches in shaping regional policy and highlighted the importance of strengthening parliamentary initiatives to support the empowerment of women and youth, accelerate digital integration, and promote green and sustainable economic growth.
As the current ASEAN Chair, Malaysia is hosting the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from May 26 to 27. The ASEAN-AIPA Leaders' Interface serves as a dedicated platform for dialogue between ASEAN heads of state/government and the Speakers, Deputy Speakers, and representatives of AIPA Member Parliaments to align regional priorities through inclusive, multi-stakeholder governance.
