Kota kinabalu: Direct AirAsia flights connecting Kota Kinabalu with Bintulu and Sibu are set to resume in November, as announced by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. The decision follows recent discussions with the airline aimed at enhancing air connectivity between Sabah and Sarawak, particularly benefiting residents of Bintulu and Sibu.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Kota Kinabalu-Bintulu route will recommence on November 1 with three flights weekly, while the Kota Kinabalu-Sibu service will start on November 2, offering four flights weekly. Both routes will utilize Airbus A320 aircraft, and tickets have been available for purchase since September 2.

The minister highlighted the importance of these direct flights for individuals traveling for work, education, business, tourism, medical treatment, and family visits. Without direct services, passengers are often forced to transit through other airports, extending their journey and increasing costs.

Tiong emphasized that improved connectivity between Sabah and Sarawak is crucial not only for easing travel but also for fostering economic activity, boosting domestic tourism, and strengthening ties between the two states. The renewed Kota Kinabalu-Bintulu route is expected to support Bintulu's growth as an industrial and economic hub, while the Kota Kinabalu-Sibu service will benefit residents of Sibu and central Sarawak.

The minister also urged airlines to maintain stable and reliable services, cautioning against frequent cancellations or last-minute schedule changes that might undermine passenger confidence. He called on AirAsia to keep fares affordable within market conditions to ensure that the increased flight options truly benefit the public.

Tiong reiterated the commitment to collaborating with airlines and relevant authorities to enhance air connectivity between Sabah and Sarawak, offering passengers more travel options and aligning flight services with the needs and development of both states.
