Segamat:The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is in need of a world-class training academy to cultivate officers skilled in advanced border management technologies, including artificial intelligence, according to Tan Sri Dr Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Chief Secretary to the Government.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shamsul Azri emphasized the importance of developing internal capabilities to ensure AKPS can independently tackle complex border security challenges over the next 10 to 20 years. He highlighted the necessity of an academy capable of producing talented Malaysians who are ready for future demands while maintaining integrity and safeguarding national interests. This statement was made during the AKPS Basic Training Course Series 1/2026 passing-out ceremony at the Segamat Police Training Centre (PULAPOL).
The proposed academy aligns with AKPS' strategic shift from merely guarding checkpoints to implementing a proactive, integrated, and intelligence-driven border control system. Shamsul Azri stressed the need for AKPS to transition from a reactive approach to becoming a security leader in the nation's border ecosystem.
He also noted that AKPS' human capital development must match technological advancements and evolving criminal tactics. Training should extend beyond the academy through on-the-job experiences and mentorship by seasoned officers.
Despite being operational for only 23 months and currently staffed at about 30 percent of its optimal level, AKPS has achieved significant results. The agency has prevented seizures and leakages worth RM265 million this year, a substantial increase compared to 2025 figures. Additionally, AKPS successfully repatriated 436 containers of electronic waste to their origin countries, collaborating with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Royal Malaysia Police, Department of Environment, and port authorities.
The 408 pioneer officers who completed their training today are the first under the new AKPS scheme, effective July 1. This group includes 39 Penolong Penguasa Sempadan (Grade KS5) and 369 Pembantu Penguasa Sempadan (Grade KS1), set to be stationed at the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link entry point starting October 1, in preparation for the service's full operation on January 1, 2027.
