Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is gearing up to extend its operational reach to two additional critical entry points in the nation's northern region, Padang Besar and Wang Kelian, by the second quarter of 2026. This strategic move is part of the agency's second phase of expansion, following its successful establishment at 22 entry points across the country since January 1, 2025, with Rantau Panjang serving as the initial operational entry point.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail highlighted the agency's impressive track record during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Negara. The AKPS has achieved commendable results, with seizure values surpassing RM80 million within the first year of its pilot operations. The minister was addressing a query from Senator Baharuddin Ahmad regarding the agency's current strength and readiness along the Perlis-Thailand border, particularly in tackling cross-border crime and smuggling activities.
The government has sanctioned the recruitment of 200 former armed forces personnel to bolster the AKPS workforce, as an immediate step towards enhancing manpower. Saifuddin Nasution emphasized that hiring former military personnel, especially those who retired at the age of 38, is a strategic move, given their existing discipline and skill sets, which helps in minimizing training expenses. These recruits will receive a starting salary of RM2,900, in addition to their pensions. The initiative aims to harness their expertise for national security enhancements, with plans to consider retired police personnel for future recruitment.
Furthermore, the AKPS is set to oversee operations at the Rapid Transit System (RTS) route between Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and Woodlands in Singapore, slated to commence in October. To manage the expected passenger movement of 10,000 individuals per hour on the route, 640 new positions have been approved specifically for RTS operations.
Currently, the AKPS employs 6,883 personnel, although the ministry is aiming for an optimal strength of 13,721 personnel in the years to come.
