Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has pledged to tighten monitoring and compliance with event guidelines and ethical standards following public backlash over the serving of alcohol at a recent official dinner event. In a statement issued today, MOTAC expressed deep regret over the incident, which triggered widespread criticism and discomfort among the public.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MOTAC acknowledged the incident with a statement of responsibility and humility, expressing sincere regret for any confusion or misunderstanding that may have caused discomfort among Malaysians. The ministry emphasized its commitment to ensuring such occurrences are not repeated and promised strict adherence to established guidelines and codes of conduct for all programs under its purview.
MOTAC also extended its appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his firm yet constructive criticism and continued support in strengthening the country's tourism, arts, and cultural sectors. The ministry assured that it would take every necessary measure to strengthen communication and pursue continuous improvements in fulfilling its responsibilities to the people and the nation.
Earlier, the Prime Minister issued a stern warning to Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and MOTAC, emphasizing that the serving of alcohol at an official event must never be repeated. He stressed that the government's policy clearly prohibits the serving of alcohol at official events, regardless of whether the event is deemed to have 'ended.'
The controversy stemmed from the Global Travel Meet dinner, where multiple photos from the event, showing the minister and guests holding glasses of wine and beer, went viral. This sparked criticism over perceived disregard for official protocol and public sensitivities.
