Thailand: The freedom of speech enjoyed by the people in a democratic system must go hand in hand with efforts to promote understanding of constitutional limits, shared values, and the principles of truth in a diverse society, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stressed that, while the public has every right to express their views, including dissatisfaction, such expressions must be grounded in knowledge, decorum, and an awareness of moral values.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar made these remarks during a 30-minute townhall session held in conjunction with the closing ceremony of the Rancakkan MADANI Bersama Malaysiaku programme. He emphasized that Islamic political traditions highlight the need for freedom to be accompanied by responsibility and the ability to assess issues fairly, civilly, and based on truth. The Prime Minister also noted that education, government agencies, the Akademi Kenegaraan, and communication initiatives play a vital role in fostering understanding among the people.
Anwar pointed out the paradox of groups condemning corruption while simultaneously supporting individuals who offer bribes. He stressed the importance of understanding the Constitution's boundaries and foundational principles to prevent extreme ideologies and entrenched racism. Nation-building, he said, requires openness to differing views and constructive criticism.
Addressing the cost of living issue, Anwar mentioned the government's response through the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy under the BUDI MADANI RON95 initiative and the expansion of the RAHMAH Sales programme. These measures aim to strike a balance between economic capability and public welfare, amidst Malaysia's low inflation rate.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the government's efforts to dismantle cartels and curb smuggling, which have saved RM15.5 billion. Despite the significance of these efforts, Anwar noted their absence from public discourse and parliamentary debate, urging recognition of the enforcement personnel's contributions.
