Kuala Lumpur:Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim departed the Ministry of Finance at 255 pm to present Budget 2027 in Parliament, scheduled for 330 pm.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, wore a light blue *baju Melayu* and matching *samping*, coordinated with his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail's headscarf. The Prime Minister carried on the tradition of using a locally crafted bag to transport the budget documents. The piece, themed "Woven Together A Malaysian Story," was created by artisans David Cho Chee Min and Amira Wani Jamil, representing diverse generations and backgrounds.
David Cho used steel wire techniques passed down from his late father, who crafted food strainers and egg baskets. Meanwhile, Amira utilized repurposed materials such as bamboo and leather. This combination symbolizes resilience and sustainability, with steel wire denoting strength and bamboo and leather illustrating efforts to repurpose and reduce waste. The bag itself was crafted by David's wife, Jennifer Tan, using velvet commonly found in songkok making.
The design conveys a message of unity, suggesting that differences in background, generation, culture, and experience can be a source of strength when united by a common purpose. This concept aligns with the spirit of Budget 2027, themed "Malaysia MADANI Reaching for the Sky, Rooted in the Earth," which emphasizes diversity and shared values as foundations for Malaysia's progress.
Accompanying Anwar were Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong, and Treasury Secretary-General Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican. Prior to leaving for Parliament, Muhamad Fierdauss Rosli from the Ministry of Finance's Integrity Unit led a prayer session.
When questioned about potential benefits for civil servants, Anwar responded briefly with "Insya-Allah, pray for it," and indicated a thumbs-up. Budget 2027 marks the fifth budget under the MADANI Government.
